Making room for what words cannot hold.
Genesis Emmanuel is a Nigerian hyperrealist artist working primarily in charcoal and graphite. Through monochrome portraiture, he explores sadness, loneliness, grief and the resilience that can exist alongside them.
Removing colour is a deliberate choice: it draws attention to the language of light, shadow, texture and expression. A quiet shift in the eyes or the weight of a shadow can carry what is difficult to put into words.
“Sometimes, drawing becomes a way of saying what I cannot quite explain.”
Each piece is created by hand, with close attention to detail and the emotional presence of the subject.
